About the Artist

David Steefel spent decades practicing law before retiring — but art was always there. The son of an art history professor, he grew up surrounded by it, and what began as painting off and on has quietly become something more: a steady, devoted practice and a rich body of work that keeps growing.
Working in oil, David is drawn to the way light and shadow transform color — the way a late afternoon can change everything about a landscape. His subjects come from the places he loves most: Colorado, where he lives; northern Minnesota, where he escapes to a summer cabin on an island; and California, where he gets whenever he can. He paints in his studio, working from photos he's taken along the way — still lakes at dawn, the golden coastline of Santa Barbara, the soft green hills of the English Cotswolds, mountain valleys in Chile.
David's paintings have been featured in juried All Colorado Art Shows at Curtis Art Center in Greenwood Village, and at the Watermark Art Center in Bemidji, Minnesota. In 2019, he took both first and second place in the Denver Bar Association Arts Contest. He also earned third place in a 2024 exhibit at the Lone Tree Art Center. His work is held in private collections across the United States and Europe.
